Smartlook is shutting down: alternatives for Wix sites

Cisco is closing Smartlook. It stopped selling new subscriptions on May 31, 2026, and on September 30, 2027 the platform shuts down and its remaining data is deleted12. If Smartlook records your Wix site, here's what to export, how to take its code off your site, and what to record visits with instead.

Of the 6 Smartlook replacements for a Wix site we checked on October 5, 2026, 5 record visits on a free plan, 4 make heatmaps and 2 go in as tracking code, like Smartlook.

When does Smartlook shut down?

On September 30, 2027: that day Smartlook's platform is switched off and all remaining customer data is deleted. Smartlook's FAQ and Cisco's end-of-life notice give the steps before it12:

May 31, 2026
End of sale: no new Smartlook subscriptions
August 31, 2026
No more renewals or expansions; paid plans run to the end of their term
August 31, 2027
Last day of support: every paid plan has ended, and accounts move to Smartlook's free plan, with its limits
September 30, 2027
The platform is switched off and all remaining customer data is deleted

Cisco names Digital Experience Analytics in Splunk Observability Cloud as the successor2, an add-on to Splunk's Real User Monitoring3. Smartlook subscriptions don't move across to it automatically, and Splunk won't migrate historical data1.

How do I export my Smartlook data?

Use Smartlook's own exports and REST API, before your paid plan ends and no later than August 31, 2027, as Smartlook advises1. Its help center describes three ways to get data out:

  • Sessions: while viewing sessions, export a CSV of up to 1,000 users in a segment4.
  • Reports: dashboards, events, heatmaps and funnels can send you reports by email, from the envelope icon at the top right4.
  • REST API: it returns visitors, events, funnels and sessions5, with a token that a project's owner creates under REST API in the project's settings6. It allows 20 requests an hour on the free plan and 100 on paid plans5, so run big exports while you're still paying.

Any new tool records only from the day you add it, so note the replays you'll still want, such as bug reports, while Smartlook still plays them.

Choose a tool with heatmaps if…

  • You used Smartlook's heatmaps, events or funnels, not just its recordings1
  • You want it all free: Microsoft Clarity makes heatmaps and replays at no cost7
  • You also record a mobile app, which Clarity's free Android and iOS SDKs cover8
  • You don't mind pasting a tracking code into Wix again, as Smartlook's Wix guide had you do9

Choose Session Recordings if…

  • You mostly watched replays to see where visitors get stuck
  • You'd rather add an app than paste a tracking code
  • You want all typing masked and recording that follows your Wix cookie banner
  • You want it free forever: 2,000 recordings a month, with no card

Session Recordings is our app. It records Wix sites only, with no mobile SDK, no heatmaps and no funnels or events, so it won't replace Smartlook in an app or for funnel reports. It's built for one job: replays of your site's visits, with typing masked in the visitor's browser and recording that follows your Wix cookie banner. It's free forever, with 2,000 recordings a month, each kept 30 days.

Wix Analytics' Session Recordings

Wix's help center sends questions about these recordings to TWIPLA10, which powers them11. A site that ran Smartlook needed a paid plan with a connected domain9, so while that plan is active, the site is already upgraded. Our comparison with TWIPLA covers the plans and privacy modes.

Microsoft Clarity

Best for
Free heatmaps and replays, with rage clicks and dead clicks flagged7
Free plan
Everything is free: up to 100,000 sessions per project a day, kept 30 days7
Paid from
None: Microsoft says there's no paid version7

If you also used Smartlook in an app, Clarity has free SDKs for Android and iOS, including React Native and Flutter8. On a Wix site it reads consent from the Wix cookie banner by itself21, and it keeps favorite recordings and a random sample for up to 9 months7. More in Clarity vs Session Recordings.

TWIPLA app

Best for
Visitor analytics, polls, funnels, heatmaps and replays in one app14
Free plan
400 tracked page visits a month, with replays and heatmaps14
Paid from
Starter $2.99, or $2.48 a month billed yearly, for 500 tracked page visits14

Heatmaps
Yes, on every plan14
Checked

TWIPLA's tracking is cookieless by default, and its lower privacy modes need visitor consent1422. Its plans count tracked page visits, and the listing doesn't say how many recordings each one includes14.

Mouseflow

Best for
Replays, heatmaps and a funnel from a free plan15
Free plan
500 sessions a month, 1 month of data15
Paid from
Essential $39, or $25 a month billed yearly, for 5,000 sessions15

Heatmaps
Yes: click, scroll and geo heatmaps on every plan15

Setup works like Smartlook's: a tracking code you paste into Wix's Custom Code16. Set the snippet's Code Type to Analytics, so Wix stops loading it before consent23. Paid plans keep data longer: 3 months on Essential, against 1 month on Free15.

Lucky Orange

Best for
Stores that want product, cart and checkout pages tracked20
Free plan
None listed; a 7-day free trial19

If you sell with Wix Stores, check this first: Lucky Orange says it tracks Wix eCommerce product pages, cart and checkout20, while Hotjar's and Contentsquare's Wix guides say they can't collect data from Wix Stores2425. Every Lucky Orange plan has every feature, with data kept from 60 days19.

How do I remove Smartlook from a Wix site?

Delete its snippet from your site's custom code. Smartlook's Wix guide has you paste its tracking code there, using older menu names (Site Manager, then Tracking & Analytics)9; today Wix keeps custom code under Settings > Custom Code17.

  1. Export first. Save what you need, as described above.
  2. Add the new tool. If it's tracking code, open its Code Type tab in Custom Code and choose Analytics, so Wix stops loading it before consent23.
  3. Delete Smartlook's snippet. In your site's dashboard, go to Settings, open Custom Code, find the snippet that holds Smartlook's tracking code and delete it.
  4. Update your privacy notice. Name the new tool instead of Smartlook. Our free privacy notice template has wording for a site that records visits.
Questions

Frequently asked

When does Smartlook shut down?

On September 30, 2027, when Smartlook's platform is switched off and all remaining customer data is deleted. Sales of new subscriptions ended on May 31, 2026 and renewals on August 31, 2026, and every paid plan ends by August 31, 2027. After that, an account can use Smartlook's free plan, with its limits, until the shutdown.

How do I export my data from Smartlook?

With Smartlook's own exports and REST API, before your paid plan ends and no later than August 31, 2027, as Smartlook advises. Its help center describes CSV exports of up to 1,000 users from a segment of sessions, email reports for dashboards, events, heatmaps and funnels, and a REST API that returns visitors, events, funnels and sessions. Splunk won't migrate historical data to Smartlook's successor.

How do I remove Smartlook from my Wix site?

Smartlook goes on a Wix site as custom code. In your site's dashboard, go to Settings > Custom Code, find the snippet with Smartlook's tracking code and delete it. Export anything you want to keep first.

What's the best Smartlook alternative for a Wix site?

It depends on what you used Smartlook for. Microsoft Clarity is free, makes heatmaps and replays, and installs as a Wix app. TWIPLA's app bundles a whole analytics suite. Mouseflow and Lucky Orange go in as tracking code, as Smartlook did. Wix Analytics has recordings of its own on an upgraded site. Session Recordings does replays only, for Wix sites, free forever for 2,000 recordings a month.

Does Session Recordings record mobile apps?

No. It records Wix sites only and has no mobile SDK. If you used Smartlook in an Android or iOS app, Microsoft Clarity has free SDKs for both.
