Free session recording and heatmap apps for Shopify, compared

How big is each free plan?

Microsoft Clarity's listing has one plan, Free Forever, with no limits listed¹, and Microsoft's FAQ says Clarity records up to 100,000 sessions per project a day². Of the capped free plans, Session Rewind's is the largest, at 3,000 session recordings per month³, though its listing showed one review, rated 1.0, when we checked. Session Recordings records 2,000 visits a month, each kept 30 days. Propel's Free Sampler counts 750 pageviews a month⁴, MIDA's free plan 250 sessions⁵ and Lucky Orange's 100 sessions⁶. Popcorn has no free plan⁷.

The units differ. A session, or a recording, is one visit, however many pages it covers; a pageview is one page, so 750 pageviews cover 750 visits at most, and fewer when visitors open several pages. Session Recordings saves a visit, and counts it, only once the visitor clicks, taps or types, so a visit that only looks and leaves uses none of the 2,000. At 2,000 in a month, recording pauses until the 1st, and the replays you have stay.

What about your checkout?

Apps that record through your theme stop at your checkout: Shopify's developer docs say a theme app extension's app blocks and app embeds can't be rendered on checkout pages, order status included¹². What the listings and docs say about checkout:

• Microsoft Clarity: its listing names checkout analytics among its features¹, and Microsoft says that on Shopify Plus stores, checkout and post-checkout pages are tracked in Clarity through Shopify's pixel¹³.
• Propel: For Shopify Plus merchants, Enterprise plans with checkout recording start at $59.90/mo.⁴
• MIDA: its Enterprise plan, at $44.90 a month, lists Checkout recordings & custom plans in app⁵.
• Fullstory, not in the table, has a Shopify app for session replay in the checkout, and it requires an existing Fullstory account and a Shopify Plus plan¹⁴.
• Session Recordings never records your checkout, its thank-you page or customer account pages.

Heatmaps on Shopify, free plan by free plan

Consent and privacy

Session Recordings follows your store's cookie consent through Shopify's Customer Privacy, which Shopify's cookie banner and consent apps connected to it report to. Where your store asks, a visitor is recorded only after allowing analytics, and a visitor who withdraws consent stops being recorded. If your store doesn't ask for cookie consent, it doesn't wait for it: it records every visitor who clicks, taps or types. Shopify's own cookie banner is under Settings › Customer privacy in your Shopify admin¹⁵.

What visitors type into form fields is masked in their browser before it's sent, and the words a shopper submits in your store's search are shown, named in the Activity list. Nobody is named: guests show as Visitor plus a short code, because the app doesn't read your customers.

• You want no traffic limit, with AI insights: Microsoft Clarity, free with no limits listed¹.
• You want replays of your store, 2,000 a month for free, with nobody recorded before they allow analytics where you ask: Session Recordings, which also lists each replay's searches, cart adds and Check out presses beside it (some themes' buttons show as plain clicks).
• You want surveys or funnels too: Propel and Lucky Orange list surveys, and Propel, MIDA, Lucky Orange and Session Rewind list funnels⁴⁶⁵³; their paid plans start at $9.90 a month.
