What changed with Hotjar
Hotjar's site now leads to Contentsquare, which says it's no longer possible to create a new Hotjar account and that new users can sign up for free on Contentsquare1. Hotjar's help center adds that existing Hotjar accounts are being moved to Contentsquare in phases, onto its Growth plan unless the account owner opts out6. Hotjar's pricing page now leads to Contentsquare's2. Its tools are broader than Hotjar's were, with journey analysis and AI summaries on Growth2. For a small Wix site, though, the steps to install it are the same as Hotjar's: a tracking code pasted into custom code34. Smartlook, by contrast, is shutting down7; see what to replace Smartlook with on Wix.
Setup on a Wix site
Hotjar's Wix guide says only Wix sites with connected domains can use Hotjar tracking, and the tag goes in Settings > Custom code, on all pages, in the head3. Contentsquare's Wix guide gives the same steps and adds that connecting a domain on Wix requires a paid Premium plan4. Both guides list four Wix features they can't collect data from: Wix Stores, Wix Forum, Wix Pro Gallery and Wix Events34. If you sell with Wix Stores, that's the main thing to check before you choose.
Adding the Contentsquare (formerly Hotjar) tag to Wix
- Connect a domain to your Wix site, if it doesn't have one yet34.
- Sign up on Contentsquare, since new Hotjar accounts can't be created, and copy your tag from its tracking settings18.
- In your site's dashboard, go to Settings, open Custom Code and click + Add Custom Code39.
- Paste the tag. Under Add Code to Pages, choose All pages; under Place Code in, choose Head34.
- Open the Code Type tab and choose Analytics, so Wix stops treating the tag as essential code that loads before consent5.
- Click Apply, give it time to take effect, then check the installation in Contentsquare4.
Session Recordings is an app you add to your site, and it brings its own recording script: there's nothing to paste, and recording starts on your published site as the app installs.
Cookie consent
Hotjar sets first-party cookies and says to ask your own legal counsel how to classify them10. On Wix, custom code is categorized as essential by default, which Wix says means it loads before visitor consent and can't be disabled, unless you change its category5. That's why the steps above set the Code Type to Analytics. Contentsquare also notes its tag doesn't read your existing cookie banner by itself, so its cookies need adding to your cookie settings6.
Session Recordings follows your Wix cookie banner: visitors who haven't allowed analytics aren't recorded, and there's no code category to set. If your site has no cookie banner, it doesn't wait for consent: it records every visitor who clicks, taps or types.
Privacy and masking
After the move to Contentsquare, keystroke input is blocked by default and can't be turned back on6. Session Recordings masks all typing in the visitor's browser before anything is sent, so typing shows as asterisks. Our free privacy notice template, with a Hotjar preset, covers what to tell visitors either way.
Price
Contentsquare's Free plan covers up to 200k monthly sessions, with replays for 5% of them (up to 10k) and one month of data, and Growth starts at $49 a month, or $39 a month billed yearly, for 7k sessions and 7k replays, rising with traffic2. Session Recordings is free forever: 2,000 recordings a month, each kept 30 days, with nothing charged per recording. At 2,000, recording pauses until the 1st of next month.
Frequently asked
Can I still sign up for Hotjar?
Not as a new user. Contentsquare, which now runs Hotjar, says it's no longer possible to create a new Hotjar account, and new users sign up on Contentsquare instead. That was the case when we checked on October 5, 2026.
How do I add Hotjar to Wix in 2026?
You add Contentsquare instead, the same way Hotjar was added. Connect a domain to your site, sign up on Contentsquare and copy its tag, then in your Wix dashboard go to Settings > Custom Code, click + Add Custom Code, paste the tag, and choose All pages and Head. Set the Code Type to Analytics before you click Apply. The setup steps above link each one to its source.
Does Hotjar work with Wix Stores?
Hotjar's own Wix guide says it can't collect data from Wix Stores, Wix Forum, Wix Pro Gallery or Wix Events, and Contentsquare's Wix guide lists the same four.
Do I need a paid Wix plan for Hotjar?
Yes, in practice. Hotjar's Wix guide says only sites with connected domains can use it, Contentsquare's Wix guide says connecting a domain on Wix requires a paid Premium plan, and Wix's custom code feature needs a connected domain too.
What's a free alternative to Hotjar on Wix?
Session Recordings is free forever, with 2,000 recordings a month, each kept 30 days, and it brings its own recording script, so there's no code to paste. Microsoft Clarity is free too, with heatmaps; see how Clarity compares.
