Platform

Shopify and Wix. On Shopify it works on an online store open to visitors, with a vintage or Online Store 2.0 theme, and switches on through its theme app embed, Session recorder; on Wix, on published sites, free sites on a wixsite.com address included. It records visits from computers, tablets and phones. Replays and heatmaps open in the Shopify admin or the Wix dashboard.

Price

Free forever, with every feature and no paid version, trial or sale. On Shopify, nothing is charged to the store's Shopify bill.

Limits

2,000 recordings a month, each kept 30 days; a starred replay is kept until it's un-starred or the app's data is erased. A visit counts once the visitor clicks, taps or types. At 2,000, recording pauses until the 1st of the next month, and nothing is charged.

Privacy

What visitors type into form fields is masked in their browser before it's sent. On Shopify, recording follows the consent the store collects through Shopify's Customer Privacy, a replay shows a search the shopper submits, nobody is named, and checkout and customer account pages are never recorded. On Wix, recording follows the site's cookie banner, and members signed in to the site show by name.

What's different

• No code to paste. On Shopify, it switches on through its theme app embed, Session recorder: a button in the app opens the theme editor with it switched on, and the owner clicks Save. On Wix, recording switches on when the app is installed, for the published site, with no tag to add and no setup screen.
• Form typing masked in the browser. What visitors type into form fields is masked on their device before anything is sent, so a replay shows that someone typed, never what they typed.
• It follows the store's or site's cookie consent. A visitor is recorded only after allowing analytics, through Shopify's Customer Privacy on Shopify and the site's cookie banner on Wix, and withdrawing consent stops the recording. Where a store or site doesn't ask, recording doesn't wait for consent.
• Heatmaps from the same visits. Click and scroll maps are made from the recorded visits with no extra script, keeping computers, tablets and phones apart and marking rage clicks and clicks that did nothing, over the last 7, 30 or 90 days.
• Guests stay anonymous. The replay list names each guest Visitor plus a short code. On Shopify, nobody is named; on Wix, only visitors signed in as the site's members show by name. Replays never get a public link.
